Ten Facts About Philippine Geography


1. The Philippines is the 70th largest country in the world according to most accounts. The total land area of the Philippines is 300,000 square kilometers. This makes the country slightly smaller than Italy and slightly bigger than Ecuador.

2. In terms of population however, the Philippines is 12th in the world (estimated population of over 101 million in 2015). It is flanked in the rankings by Mexico and its Southeast Asian neighbor to the west, Vietnam.

3. In terms of population density, the Philippines is more densely populated than almost all countries with the same size. There are 339 people per square kilometer in the Philippines. This roughly puts the country in the same cluster as India and Japan (also among the most populous nations in the world).

4. The Philippines is an archipelago consisting of more than 7,000 islands. The largest islands of which constitute more than 94% of the total land area of the country.

5. The largest island in the country is Luzon. Among the major landmasses, Luzon is the northernmost and is also the most populous. It is the 15th largest in the world and is the 4th most populous after Java (Indonesia), Honshu (Japan) and Great Britain (United Kingdom).

6. The capital of the Philippines is the City of Manila located in the southern part of Luzon Island. The capital is located in an urban agglomeration known as the National Capital Region (NCR) that consists of  16 cities and 1 municipality. This NCR's total population is 11.6 million residents. 

7. The Philippines is comprised of 81 provinces as of July 2015. These provinces are further clustered into 18 regions.

8. The largest region is Region IV-B. This region is also called the MIMAROPA region to denote the first two letters of the island provinces that are in this group - Mindoro Oriental, Mindoro Occidental, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan.

9. The Philippines' largest province is Palawan. Palawan is a long narrow island province that serves as the western most part of the Philppines in the central part of the country. It is 450 kilometers long and just 50 kilometers wide on average making it relatively hard to traverse from end to end.
 
10. The archipelagic province of Batanes is the smallest province in the Philippines. It is also the smallest in terms of population. Located at the extreme north of the country, Batanes has a relatively different type of climate due to its distance from the equator.
